A few years later, the Sportscenter put in four HardTru tennis courts, an outdoor pool and a beach volleyball site. In the late 1990’s, the rapidly expanding gym, fitness and health club embarked on a million dollar building project and added 2 new basketball courts, a group fitness room that now holds Zumba, Les Mills® BodyPump, Yoga, Pilates, Barre, Gentle Yoga, Boot Camp, Cardio Blast, YoFITga, and BodyPump – and 99 classes and a huge weight room with the latest free weights and Nautilus equipment.

At that time, they also expanded the nursery, the personal training studio and added cycling to the group classes. Randy Green joined the staff as an intern while attending Catawba College and became the general manager in 2001. He has helped lead the way in the Sportscenter’s evolution from a racquetball club and gym, to the region’s finest sports, fitness, health, and wellness club. The Sportscenter has always been a family-friendly club.

On January 1, 2006, Bruce and Brian Burchfield, along with their sister Betsy Handler, bought 100% ownership of the club from Sammy Johnson and Dr. Frank Sellers. They bought the club with an Extreme Makeover in mind and have never looked back!

Since 2006, the Sportscenter has expanded the tennis facilities by adding 5 clay tennis courts and a two-story clubhouse and pro shop. They also resurfaced the 4 hard tennis courts a few years ago. Mark Allen is the director of tennis and Renee Goolsby is the head tennis pro. Together they have developed Quickstart tennis, cardio tennis, USTA leagues, inter-club leagues, summer camps, clinics, lessons, and a Performance Tennis Academy.

The Sportscenter next added a Splash Park near the outdoor pools — along with a picnic area for birthday parties or relaxing lunches. The opportunities for swim fitness and fun has increased, as well.

Jennifer Green, Randy’s wife, heads up the water aerobics program that offers classes like Advanced Deep Water, Shallow H2O, and Fit ’n Fun. Jennifer Newton has developed the Sportscenter’s Splash Swim Team that competes in the Southern Piedmont Conference during the summer months.

By the way, the outdoor pools open on May 1st of each year and don’t close until November 1st! That means that the Sportscenter Athletic Club offers six months of outdoor fun at the Splash Park, outdoor pools and the beach volleyball court.

Jennifer and McNeil Bethune head up the indoor pool, year round swimming programs. As well as offering beginner and intermediate swim lessons, they also run Level I, II, III swim clinics for beginners to competitive swimmers.

When you are done exercising you can go get a massage at StressMedic, located inside the Sportscenter. They offer Swedish massage, sports massage, medical massage, therapeutic, and prenatal massage at a very competitive rate. You can also get a smoothie, protein shake or latte at Higher Grounds Cafe located in our lobby.

The Extreme Makeover Expansion continues to this day. A CrossFit box, CrossFit Cabarrus, is led by Brandon and Katie Burchfield — along with their son Judah and dog Nala!

At the first of this year Randy, headed a Nursery upgrade and completely made over the weight lifting room with brand new free weights, Hoist machines and a Rogue Rack system that is second to none.

Cliff Ried is our personal training director along with Angelo Bannister and a team of professional personal trainers.
